Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

These books will make up a core part of the curriculum for our school's first ever nonfiction class. I am so pleased to have the opportunity to introduce students to the beauty of the nonfiction genre, and in this class students will learn how to meditate on different topics through their writing. This will not only enhance their literacy skills, but students will get to know their own mind by sitting with different topics and ideas.

By the end of this class students will produce a personal essay on a topic important to them, and a piece of literary journalism that focuses on their community.

Hanif Abdurraqib's "They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us" and "The Corpse Walker" by Liao Yiwu will act as mentor texts. They are regarded as some of the finest pieces of contemporary nonfiction.

This class, and these texts, will show the wide range of topics and formats nonfiction writing can take. I am confident that students will leave feeling with a sharpened sense of insight and thoughtfulness
