Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 27 fourth-grade students attend an excellent, inner-city school where every student qualifies for a free lunch. Although it is a high-poverty school, each student strives to succeed. Parents and teachers are dedicated to students' success by making sure our school is a warm, safe place for learning.
Our school motto is, "We're getting ready for college," and my fourth graders are doing just that!
They are hard-working, wonderful kids, and I am doing my best to get them ready for the future!
My Project
My fourth grade students love to read! They have been working hard all year long to improve their fluency and comprehension skills by participating in reading groups and being diligent when it comes to their daily reading logs. I am so proud of the progress they have made in reading skills like sequencing and identifying main ideas and details. I am even more proud of the obvious love for reading my students have developed. In order to foster their love of reading, I have done my best over the years to create an inviting classroom library with a good selection of books. As time goes on, however, some of our books are beginning to show wear. This is why I would like to freshen up our library. I am asking for a variety of reading books of all Lexile reading levels that my students will be excited about reading. I have chosen non-fiction level 1 & 2 reading books on animals, grade-level series books like Junie B. Jones and Flat Stanley, and even some chapter books such as Harry Potter for my more advanced readers. All of the books I have requested will be available to my students as needed, and my students will also be allowed to take them home. Each of the books will be labeled by Lexile reading level, making it easier for my students to select books appropriate for them, which will help them improve their reading fluency over time. They will also be used to create classroom book reviews that help them develop their comprehension skills.
An exciting variety of books should be available in every classroom library!
Keeping our classroom library fresh with new, high-interest books will inevitably keep my students reading, and will also help improve their reading skills over time!
