Help Foster Language Development for ELLs With Technology!
My students need technology games to help foster language development, letter and sound recognition and reading comprehension skills. My students also need books on CD.
Imagine what it is like coming to a new country and not understanding the language being spoken in your class.. That is the problem that many of my students face. Many of my students come from China and are put into the classroom where they do not understand the language or the classroom materials.
I teach in a low income area where many of the parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet.
My classroom is primarily made up of English Language Learners. Most come right from China and are put in classrooms where they do not understand their teacher. They come to school motivated to learn, but it is a challenge for them when they do not have the materials in the classroom that enables them to do so. Most of them go home to households where English is not spoken, so their only opportunity to learn and be exposed to the language is in school.
My Project
Although language is not universal, technology is. The literacy software and books on CD that I have asked your help in getting will provide my students with the technological means to help them begin to understand and speak the English language. It will provide them with opportunities to learn the letters and sounds using a mean that they are familiar with, computers. They will be able to, in a small group or independently, practice the sounds, have books read to them, and work on comprehension skills. The materials I have asked for will expose and immerse my students in the English language, which will help in their language development.
Learning a new language is challenging at any age, but it is easier for children to learn a new language in the earlier years, which is why it is so important that my students get these materials.
The materials will provide my students with the opportunity to learn the letters and sounds They will also expose them to literature while working on comprehension skills and vocabulary development through the use of something that they are familiar with, technology.
