This project will benefit my entire middle school, a rough estimate of approximately 450 students grades 6-8 at this Title I Oakland middle school.
The students at this school offer a variety of languages, life experiences, and perspectives enrich our school community; they have unique, creative, powerful ideas, and as young teens they are at an important moment in life where they are longing to understand the world around them in a deeper and more complex way.
They all deserve to have the opportunity to do this, no matter their individual access to goods and supplies outside of the classroom.
We truly are a multicultural school community, and our school slogan encourages all students (and their teachers!) to consider ourselves a family. We strive to care for one another academically and socially, and to truly offer our best selves to each other at all times and in all circumstances.
My Project
Learning does not take place in a vacuum. Young students bring their thoughts, emotions, curiosities, concerns, and yes - their physical bodies - into the classrooms with them every day. When students are distracted by any of these things, it can disrupt their ability to learn, grow, and engage with their peers.
The hygiene products in this project will help students learn important self-care as they approach and travel through puberty.
Having the tools they need such as deodorant or menstrual products can limit the embarrassment students may feel as their bodies are changing.
Because this project will go toward providing resources for all middle school students on our campus, no one will have to feel uncomfortable or singled-out for receiving certain materials (such as deodorant). Instead, we can journey together as we learn how to care for ourselves and our bodies!
