This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a great school in West Philadelphia. My students come from all different cultural backgrounds and socio-economic backgrounds. Our school is a Title I school where all our children receive free lunch and breakfast. With this being said sometimes my students are lacking in supplies and technology because their families can not afford it. They work so hard and with the help of DonorsChoose.org. I can have a classroom that provides them everything that otther classrooms across the country have.
My Project
So many kids come to school hungry and unfocused. This is an absolute travesty in 2018. My goal is to have a place where they can come and grab a pack of crackers, chips or fruit snacks and then head back to their learning. If they are focused on their hunger they can not be focused on their learning. Since teachers started this at our school we have seen gains in academics and a serious decline in bad behaviors. This is every teachers goal for their classroom. When a student has the resources to be focused and learn they will. Using these snacks like crackers and chips is a quick way to get the kids a quick snack and be back at learning.
