I teach on the Flathead Indian Reservation in northwest Montana. My students are Salish, Kootenai, Pend 'Oreille and the descendants of the first homesteaders in the region --many of whom were French Canadian. We have a mix of African-American, Hispanic and Samoan students, among other ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. Students at Ronan High School are resilient and able to manage many different challenges and are working hard to overcome the setbacks from the Covid-19 pandemic. We have a thriving Native American club that has created some powerful educational videos and traveled to meet with the Governor of Montana to help contribute to a task force on the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples; we have an active 4H mentoring program where our students work with at risk elementary students; we have student-leaders in the "Warrior Movement," which is a movement to combat the epidemic of suicide on reservations. Our students are versatile, funny, kind, hard-working and very engaged with the world.
My Project
Many of our students arrive at school hungry and don't have regular meals at home. They are often asking for snacks to help them focus in class. This donation will allow me to provide nourishing snacks for students who need them. Many studies show that if a student's basic needs are cared for they are much more likely to be able to be successful in a learning environment. This is a simple solution to helping our students be successful despite the stressors and lack of resources that some of them experience at home.
