Help me give my students the materials they need in order to explore music through STEM. Materials like headphones and headphone splitters will allow us to explore composition through modern technology such as Chromebooks, SoundTrap, and Scratch.
Our students are a diverse group of learners in an urban setting. We have nearly 100 middle grade students at the school. Ours is an inclusion school and many of our students a come from a range of cultural and economic backgrounds. All of our students are incredibly inquisitive, creative, and compassionate.
It is critical that we provide our students with opportunities for hands-on learning.
With the proper materials, students can begin to build their understanding of science through the music they are inspired to create.
Students will explore this semester's school-wide science theme through studying the "science of sound". We will use both nontraditional and traditional methods to explore the ways in which science and music intersect.
Our focus aims to integrate STEM and music by utilizing software such as Scratch to explore composition through coding.
We will also explore online composition platforms like Soundtrap so our students can see the ways in which musical creativity can be expressed using only their Chrombooks and an internet connection.
Our traditional approach will focus on hands-on exploration of how sound travels through gas, liquids, and solids. Using everyday items like string, balloons, and bottles, we can begin to see how sound travels through vibration.
