Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each day I am greeted by 25 eager second graders. They look to me, asking with their eyes, “What do you have planned for me today? What will you teach me?” You see, my students know they attend school somewhere special. We are a charter school, free and public, that provides students with a school day 2 hours longer than some of our neighboring schools, and 80% of our inner-city students are eligible for free lunch. The teachers at Chicago International Charter School are crazy for education!
I've become an expert in “creative resource procurement.” I've learned how to bargain shop for the books my students need. I have scratched out the names of the previous owners of hundreds of books purchased second-hand. Teachers are usually left with the responsibly of building a classroom library with their own funds. The teacher in my classroom last year had supplied his own books and book shelves and then took them with him. Within three months, I have managed to assemble hundreds of books for my students on a variety of topics.
“Oh no! A book is on the floor!” I am trying to teach my children the proper way to care for books. I have made due with baskets to house the books for the meantime. However, the books often end up on the floor and ripped because the baskets are not ideal for keeping books. One important indicator of a student's future success is how well they can organize themselves. Most of my students are learning for the first time how to categorize materials, keep objects clean, and to put things back in their proper places. Unfortunately, some of the homes my students come from are disheveled, messy, and dirty.
Your donation of a library unit and book display holder would show the children that books are precious commodities that we must take care of. With your assistance, I would be able to teach the children an advanced system that would divide the books into categories such as fiction, non-fiction, fairy tales, and chapter books. This would also make it easier for them navigate public libraries on their own. Let's help these children grow up to have book shelves in their future homes!
