Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This September, I will start as the 9th grade Earth Science teacher at Kingsbridge International High School in the Bronx. This will be the school's second year in existence and my third as a NYC public school science teacher. As an "international school," KIHS is geared toward educating new immigrants to the United States and we are expecting a freshman class of 125. This means that I have to be as creative as possible to educate students still learning English. I am gearing up to teach by showing a lot of pictures and by doing a lot of science demonstrations and experiments. I am requesting YOUR help to make my classroom Earth Science-friendly. I have selected a bunch of detailed Earth-topic posters that can be hung and used in class to SHOW students Earth processes while also explaining background on planets, clouds, plate tectonics, etc. I am also requesting a big purchase of Eyewitness Earth Science books. The books in this set are very ELL (English Language Learners) friendly because each one shows incredible pictures and detailed explanations in simple English. I am purchasing necessities like dictionaries for my students but having a resource like the eyewitness series might give my students that extra advantage in understanding the complex topics that I will be presenting this year. I have also requested a few models that I can use in the classroom to SHOW how the sun rotates around the world, how the planets circulate, and how earthquakes work. I think that with these materials and my creativity, I will be able to introduce my 9th grade scientists to their home: EARTH! Many thanks.
