Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle school students at School 21 in Paterson, NJ are in need of help. I teach approx. 90 students (two 6th grade classes and one 7th Grade class) with hardly any resources. Of these close to 90 students, only 13 were found to be proficient in Literacy on the state test. Throughout my 18 years of teaching students who face severe hardships, I have never seen such a decline in reading and writing abilities.
I'm in the front lines of educating children who face severe hardships in almost every aspect of their lives already; socio-economic factors inhibit their preparedness and having a lack of books and technology in our school make being literate and up to speed in the digital age quite difficult, if not impossible.
I believe their performance on the state exam is reflective not only a lack of content knowledge, but also an inability to type. They can achieve beyond their circumstances, and most want to. We need the resources to encourage literacy, help them become on-level academically and get them out of the 20th century. In doing so, we need basics: preparedness, activity variety, opportunity for collaboration, nightly homework and a warm environment that encourages learning.
My Project
These materials will help my students have basic school needs available to them. Classical/Relaxing music to help them settle in and to create a positive writing environment. My students will not have to worry about not having pencils and paper, as many are unprepared. Large paper and markers will allow them to work on writing assignments collaboratively. Crayons can be used to illustrate work, or use color codes in their writing (e.g. sentence styles, figurative language etc..), dry erase markers and sentence strips provide me with tools to have vibrant and colorful writing on our 'un-technological' white board and introduce vocabulary on a colorful Word Wall. We don't have workbooks, and with these workbooks, I will have resources to provide varied Literacy homework regularly, and incentive cards to encourage work completion.
