Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a full day Kindergarten class with 20 students in Los Angeles. The focus in this grade is to teach them to read. Out of the 20, 17 are English Language Learners. Our 195 day calendar (with the students) allows me to teach 10 thematic units. Some of those themes are Weather, Transportation, Animals, Weather, Numbers, and Friends. While the themes are age-appropriate, my class library is not adequately stocked with picture books that reinforce these themes. When students have appropriate picture books that correlate with the themes, they are more likely to practice concepts of print and look for words they recognize. In additon, they will more likely re-tell the story to help build their vocabulary development. I propose 48 paperback picture books that are reflective of the aforementioned themes. These books will be used in both of our Kindergarten classes, so 40 students will benefit from this donation. These books will help students identify settings and characters. Also, these books will help build vocabulary and concepts of print. If we are to have our students be literate, critical thinkers, it is only fair that they are exposed to quality, age-appropriate picture books.
