Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our history students are inquisitive and motivated, but our school lacks the computer resources to support our need to access computers in class and at home to practice and develop the important skills of writing, editing, research and presentation.

I teach US History and Government and Economics to 11th and 12th grade students in a small, progressive city school.

The school has a strong design program and attracts students from all over the city. Most of the student body (over 75%) is eligible for free or reduced price lunch. My classes feature high-interest lessons that make history relevant to students’ lives while preparing them with the scholarly skills they will require in college and the workplace.

My Project

Having computers with wireless internet available in class will enable students to use and interact with educational blogs, web-based curricula and our school’s wiki pages on a regular basis. It will also enable students to respond to written prompts online or electronically, streamlining the editing process and giving students with special needs an alternative way to respond to class material. At the moment, our department shares a laptop cart, which is in disrepair, with several other departments, making planning for computer activities difficult. If we can fill our laptop cart with enough computers for one class, we will not have to share and can plan more high-interest, motivational activities for history students of all levels. This will enable us to properly prepare students for college level historical studies by being able to model and practice digital research skills, to write and revise in class, and to build and experience digital presentation formats.

A class set of netbooks will provide our students instruction and practice with skills that are integral to the life of college students, which, as of now, our school is unable to provide.

Because many of our students enter school at a serious disadvantage with inadequate resources at home, it is especially important that we support them at school. By increasing access to technology and resources we can work to reach the ideal of providing equal educational opportunities for ALL students.
