Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My early intervention occupational therapy students are amazing 3-5-year-olds. My students need assistance developing their fine motor, gross motor, visual motor, sensory-motor, and other skills. Through play and exploration, I work 1:1 and in small groups with my students to learn and develop these motor skills. These requested materials would make a huge difference in giving the children resources to learn and grow.

My preschool students have a variety of different disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, and other physical and developmental disabilities that make accessing school and play more difficult.

When working with my students, I often bring them into a separate motor room to work on the skills that are more challenging for them. This space is always full of items that make it appear visually cluttered and busy. Many of my students have difficulty with sensory processing-i.e. how their bodies interpret and react to sensory stimulation around them. A visually busy and cluttered environment sets my students up to be immediately dysregulated from too much stimulation, and not ready to learn. My goal this year is to provide a calming space that is not over stimulating, to give my students better opportunities to learn.

Many of my students come from lower socioeconomic homes and do not have access to materials like this outside of school. I want to be able to provide all of my students, regardless of socioeconomic status, quality materials that will help them grow and develop to their full potential. Materials such as playdough, markers, crayons, and fine motor games are essential to help my students develop the skills they need for their future. Through guided play, therapy sessions, free play, and exploration, my students will benefit from having these materials in their classroom and motor room
