Sixth grade students at our school are participating in a character education curriculum which emphasizes equality, justice, and compassion.

Budget cuts this year have made it impossible for the school to fund copies of the novel "A Thousand Never Evers" for our students to read in conjunction with this unit.

The author of the book, Shana Burg, will be presenting a program to the 6th graders in February. Her book brings alive the experiences of a family in Alabama who lived through the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. Ms. Burg's father was actually an attorney who moved to the south to represent civil rights activists, so she grew up hearing stories of his experiences. Our students, for the most part, have not been exposed to this time in our history.

Your help will make it possible for our students to enlarge their understanding of the Civil Rights movement and of issues such as prejudice and injustice which are still present in our world today.
