My Students

UP Academy is a turnaround charter public school, operating within Boston Public Schools. 1/3 of our students have special needs, while about 80% receive free and reduced lunch.

Duke is one of the two classrooms I teach; they're a phenomenal group of 8th graders who, while behind, are dead set on achievement and going to great high schools and colleges.

This group benefits greatly from visual learning and visual cues. Many of them were in self contained classrooms and one point and are now moving into fully inclusive learning with our help.

My Project

Right now, many students have trouble following lessons because there are few visual components. A document camera changes the possibilities for our classroom. We can annotate readings together, go into greater detail on a variety of texts, and most importantly, keep the students focused throughout our fast-paced lessons!

A doc cam will change the game for the students of Duke--they need all the help they can get to get to grade level and score proficient on the MCAS.

This will open up a world of options for students in need!
