Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Say "goodbye, 2023-24", and "helloooo" to another school year in August. My goal is to have materials ready to go by the start of the school year. With the help of donors, I hope to have all the necessary science supplies for both new labs, as well as consumable items that are running low.
The following hodgepodge of items will get me through the new school year: Students will do a magnetic field lab where we will use bar magnets and iron filings to see the magnetic fields.
Students will also do some new labs on friction with the help of rolling friction cars as well as measuring how friction dissipates heat (hence, surface thermometers)! I would also like to request some organizational classroom items such as floating shelves and whiteboard magnets. Lastly, my absolute favorite thing to do every year is to give hardworking students the "Scientist of the Week" award. Students who receive this award are invited to the end of the year Ice Cream Party in May, and given a beautiful certificate with their names written in the periodic table font!
My students: My school has a rich and vibrant culture, consisting of 97% of students who are of color and 40% who are English learners. The teaching and administrative staff is just as diverse, wonderful, and supportive. My students are visual and hands-on learners. They are amazing and hardworking 8th graders who love doing labs. I teach four sections of 8th graders and a section of Newcomer students who have recently immigrated to the U.S., and speaks very little English. Thus, doing hands-on experiments is especially important to help students learn science!
