I am a second year teacher, having almost completed my first full year with my own students. I found out about this program though my colleagues a year ago, and was so fortunate to have my first proposal filled generously! And I would really love another generous person's help! I am teaching a 5th grade classroom at PS 126. This school is located on the lower East side of Manhattan. The school is also located in the mist of the Alfred E. Smith project houses and next to a homeless shelter. Most of the students derive from these areas and desperately would appreciate any materials you can provide. My students are eager learners who require lots of attention and affection from me, as well as comfort from their classroom and physical surroundings. What we all would love to have in our classroom is a new vacuum. I know that sounds like such an unlikely school request, but my classroom has a large rug in the front of the room. This area is where more than 50% of my teaching occurs. The UFT has expressed continual concerns for the health and safety of our students being exposed to germs found in our rugs, and recommend daily cleaning of these rugs. Yet, my school does not have funding for these "luxuries," and the BOE certainly finds other areas to spread the wealth. We would love to have a heavy-duty, commercial vacuum cleaner in our room to hopefully prevent and eliminate any negative health hazards. Many of my students suffer from allergies and asthma, and I feel practically guilty having them exposed to a rug that might house additional germs. We would of course insist that all neighboring teachers utilize it as well! I know my students would also take responsibility for cleaning our rug everyday, teaching them even more vital "life" lessons! Thank you in advance for your time and consideration into this request. My students are truly amazing kids who deserve all the best I can give them! Any generous donation would be more than greatly received!
