My Students

I teach kindergarten at a culturally diverse PK-5 school in the center of Portland, Oregon. My class is the only kindergarten class on the neighborhood side of a dual language immersion program. Our school is built on the strong history of the community and is an international baccalaureate (IB) school. We also have a unique partnership with local artists and Portland State University that houses a contemporary art museum within our school with an unusual pairing between early education and internationally renowned artists and their work.

Kindergarten is such a huge year for students because students learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and study skills that they will use throughout their schooling.

The development of self-esteem is one of the important goals of kindergarten. In order to accomplish this, I am focusing on the Social Justice ideas of Identity, Diversity, Justice, and Action. The goal is to teach these critical ideas while at the same time teaching academic skills through rich literature where students can find examples of themselves and be exposed to different perspectives through books that highlight the beauty of diversity.

My Project

The benefits of art for kids are many and include problem-solving abilities, creativity, literacy, fine & gross motor skills, connection, and understanding. It is also valuable because it allows children to process their world, to deal with sometimes scary emotions in a safe way, and because it gives them critical sensory input. Art is also important for its own sake—as a source of beauty and expression, as well as simply for the process of creating. For kindergarteners, it is an essential way to process what they are learning and to express themselves.
