Help me give my students the ability to be successful readers by giving them working headphones to complete their reading software and listen to audio books at their reading level.
I teach 11-13 year old students who are either learning English as a second language or struggling (2-3 years behind) in their reading ability. Many of my students this year have attention disorders and struggle to focus on any one activity for a sustained amount of time.
My students are capable and kind, but life circumstances have created situations for many of them that have caused them to fall behind in reading.
Because they struggle with reading, most of my students are also falling behind in their other subjects as well.
I have provided tools for my students with attention disorders such as bouncy rubber bands for their feet and fidget cubes and putty for them to use with their fingers. While these tools are helping with some daily activities, many of my students still struggle with reading books. I have found that with the program we are using, Read 180, my students are finding success in reading through audio books that they can listen to as they read the book. It is amazing to see their smiles or to hear their excitement when they finally finish their first book. It is amazing!
My Project
These gaming headsets will help my struggling students get excited about using the curriculum software that will help them become better readers. They will be less distracted as the headsets will cancel out noises that may distract them from their work.
Being able to listen to a book while reading, will assist my students with attention issues to finish a longer story and finally feel the excitement of completing a book.
Students will use these headsets every day to help their reading ability improve. This will lead them to become better students in all of their classes. Becoming successful readers, will lead these students to becoming successful students overall.
