When the boxes of supplies and the Glowforge arrived, the classroom was absolutely buzzing with excitement. My students were eager to see how these new resources would bridge the gap between their scientific inquiries and their creative expressions. Seeing their faces light up as they unboxed vibrant art supplies alongside technical building materials was a moment I won't soon forget.\r\n\r\nWe recently used these resources for a hands-on project where students designed and built functional gliders and mousetrap cars. A major highlight of this project was the use of the Glowforge to cut the balsa wood for our gliders. In previous years, students had to use handheld razor blades to cut their wings and fuselages, which was always a major safety concern. With the Glowforge, the process is now much safer and significantly more precise. Students can focus on the physics of lift and drag rather than worrying about slips with a sharp blade.\r\n\r\nThe project culminated in a high-energy mousetrap car race in the hallway. Students used their new materials to modify their chassis for better traction and reduced friction. It was incredible to watch them troubleshoot their designs in real-time, adjusting their \"engines\" and wheel alignments between heats. This task required both engineering precision and artistic flair; seeing them realize that a scientist or engineer must also be a creative thinker was a true \"lightbulb\" moment for the entire class.\r\n\r\nThese materials have allowed me to teach in a more holistic way, ensuring that every type of learner in my room—whether they are technically minded or artistically gifted—feels capable and inspired. Your support has not just provided \"stuff\"; it has transformed our daily classroom environment into a studio of innovation. We are already planning our next project using the Glowforge to explore biological illustrations and 3D terrain models. Thank you for investing in our future and making this advanced technology accessible to my students.","fullyFundedDate":1696552155655,"projectUrl":"project/putting-the-a-in-stem/7908437/","projectTitle":"Putting the A in STEM","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Heinrich","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6002960_orig.jpg?crop=1036,1036,x832,y204&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1696182166492","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6002960"},{"teacherId":9610889,"projectId":9487584,"letterContent":"I just wanted to take a minute to say THANK YOU for your support! Our Art & Design class benefits because of your generous sketchbook donations. I require all students to keep a sketchbook daily filled with warm-ups, exercises, notes and \"junk journaling.\" I often get students who are unable to provide their own sketchbooks and with our donated sketchbooks, I am able to provide one for those who are unable to get on their own. I never ask for their reasons, but recognize that each student comes with their own story, and may need help along the way.\r\n\r\nMy hope and desire is that students would make their sketchbooks \"personal\" and truly give them their \"creative space.\" We do use them for refining our drawing skills daily, following different \"step by step\" tutorials (both online, and handouts). Students see a lot of success with this. Students who may have struggled with drawing at the start of the school year... often see improvement in a short amount of time. Every Friday is a \"Free Draw Friday\" in which I allow students to draw anything they want... whether that's following tutorials of interest, drawing from their imaginations, or, \"junk journaling.\" Junk journaling is just a way for students to cut, paste & design with color and shapes. I'm not very concerned with the \"content\" when they're junk journaling, but rather... giving them another opportunity to \"do it by hand!\" \r\n\r\nWhile I love the Graphic Design & Digital Photography component of the class, there's something to be said for \"by hand\" artwork.... And our sketchbooks, keep us accountable to that daily. Thank you for contributing to our program. We honestly could not do it without you. It takes a village to build a program, and generous donors like you to provide these opportunities. Thank you for all you have done.","fullyFundedDate":1753455101439,"projectUrl":"project/all-students-need-a-sketchbook-to-call-t/9487584/","projectTitle":"ALL Students Need a Sketchbook to Call Their Own!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Shinn","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9610889_orig.png?crop=398,398,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753251938891","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9610889"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_39665","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":843,"numTeachers":36,"percentFrplEligible":69,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":34,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":55,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"23.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":67.9,"schoolId":39665,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Millswood Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Millswood Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/lodi-unified-school-district/millswood-middle-school/39665"}
