I would like 9 copies of Write Outloud SOLO by Don Johnston to help my emotionally disturbed and asperger's/autistic students improve the content, quality and length of their writing. By hearing a word pronounced when typed, then the sentence and finally the essay, my students will receive the reinforcement necessary for their great thoughts to be put to paper. My students are wonderful, but often frustrated because they cannot get down on paper their ideas in such a way that they are perceived as the intelligent young people they are. They just give up. I teach in a self-contained special day class. We do not have enough "clout" to be able to access much in the way of specialized support because there are not enough students for a sizeable impact. I work at a Title 1 school whose students are primarily minority and also limited/no English speaking. 9 copies of Write Outloud would motivate my students to become involved in the writing process and the success they will have will help them feel great about themselves and their abilities, rather than their disabilities. Rather than having students who are self-abusive because they can't keep up, my students will be self-accepting of their limitations, but also self-assured in that which they can do, if they have the appropriate supports. Write Outloud Solo will help provide my students with the assistive technology they need to be successful.
