Teaching in a low income/high poverty school gives me the opportunity to work with kids who come to school with many personal challenges. Although these students may come to me with these challenges, it is my passion to develop a safe, comfortable, and meaningful learning environment which gives each student the chance to reach their highest potential.
When they come to me in August, they become a part of me.
Although childhood should be a joyful, carefree time of exploration, many times children living in poverty spend more time struggling to survive within their world. In my class, I desire to provide stability and emotional support while motivating and engaging the interests of my students. In doing this, I hope to build their self-confidence and allow them to see their full academic and lifelong potential.
My Project
We are blessed to be the only school in Columbus County that is 1:1 with Chromebooks in 1st grade. We use them daily to enhance my instruction and support their learning. We focus a lot in 1st grade on letter sounds and building vocabulary.
There are many great websites and apps that are built specifically to support these skills but unfortunately we do not have enough headphones for each student to use since many of ours were damaged by water that came through the roof during Hurricane Florence.
With your support each student will be able to listen to stories being read aloud online, play interactive learning games to enhance their letter sound fluency, and listen to instructions while using Zearn Math. Many of our students would also benefit from wearing these headphones when they aren't using Chromebooks minimizing outside distractions as they write a story or take a test.
