My Students
My students are 2nd graders in a high poverty, inner-city primary school. 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch. We give students coats to keep warm, pencils to do their homework with, and backpacks to carry their schoolwork home in. 99% of the time my students come to school happy, smiling, and eager to learn. They are kind, caring, and curious, and always ready to lend a helping hand to one another. The other 1% of the time though I hear stories about gunshots in the night, homelessness, death, and sadly abuse. I comfort, console, counsel, cheer, and most importantly listen without judging. In 8 short years they have already endured a lifetime of heartache. Despite all of this they constantly want to learn. They ask many questions and soak up the answers like sponges. They understand at an early age that education is a way out for them. Our district asks the students to make a promise to dream big!
My Project
We use three different computer-based learning programs in my classroom, two for mathematics and one for literacy. All three programs are interactive therefore headphones are a necessity in order for students to be successful. There are 6 student computers in our room and we have access to 5 iPads. We also utilize the computer lab for one period per week where we have to bring our own headphones.
It is so very frustrating to both myself and my students to repeatedly hear "my headphones don't work!"
With these new headphones, which will ALWAYS work, my students will be able to successfully complete their learning goals and shift on to new learning paths, which will move them closer and closer to their grade level benchmarks.
