Hear Ye, Hear Ye! We Can't Hear! (Our Earbuds Break!)
Help me give my students a good pair of headphones so they can hear the computers each time they log on to take their monthly math and reading exams that are now mandated by the state of NC.
My class comes from an area in Winston Salem that is very diverse. We are close to downtown and a major hospital practically sits in our parking lot. On one end of the street there are doctors living nearby in the more historic areas and surrounded by medical buildings. But on the other side of the street we have the not-so-historic, run-down side. Our school is a Title I school with 100% of the students receiving free lunch. Forget reduced-price lunch. Here, all kids are guaranteed a warm breakfast and lunch free of charge.
This year our school has the highest number of students enrolled from the Red Cross Homeless Shelter than we've ever seen.
Many other students are bused to us from the Children's Home, for orphans and domestic abuse victims and their children, which is right around the next corner.
Another thing that sets us apart, is that the district HAG program is held at our school. Polar opposites right!?! The HAG program brings an extreme shift to the economic diversity of our students. The two sides couldn't be more father apart than the north and south pole.
Our differences make us stronger!
My Project
The State of NC has now required that all students take a monthly online reading and math placement test. The school laptops are already hard to hear with their cheap built in speakers but when you add on the cheap dollar store earbuds that 90% of my students have, the sound quality is very poor. Very frequently the earbuds wind up breaking entirely or one ear at a time. Sometime the children go weeks without earbuds while waiting for parents to get them a new pair.
With your help, I will have a class set of reusable, over the ear, high-quality headphones for each child.
This will help my students focus and hear the sounds and volume of their tests better. They will be able to concentrate more on the test and perform better & higher each month and truly show what they know.
