We began reading this novel in March and the students were hooked right away. They loved the continual cliffhangers and they always wanted to read on when time was up. We would often be detectives while reading, looking for clues to prove our hypothesis. We found a lot of evidence along the way and new clues always brought excitement. \r\n\r\n We didn't tell the students the books were theirs until the very last week of reading the novel. We wanted to surprise them at the end of the year with the gift of their books. They were so excited that they jumped up and down in celebration. We were able to finish reading the novel on the very last day of the school year and the students can now reread their books over the summer.\r\n\r\n Your gift of these books inspired a love of reading in the fourth grade, but also in the school as a whole. When the students became invested in the novel, they told their friends about it and many of the 3rd and 5th grade students also began to read the series. A few of the students in our classes bought the entire series themselves as they wanted to read more about Serafina and her adventures. The incentives are given out at the end of each month to those students who have been selected by their classroom teacher along with being able to partipate in morning announcements and a certificate highlighting the CREW area(s) they have exhibited for the month.\r\n\r\nStudents were so excited and thankful to receive a pencil, bracelet and sensory item for their hard work. This helped encourage other students to work hard each month to implement being CREW. The incentives really make a difference in our students with supporting their hard work and encouraging them to do better. The monthly reward system creates a positive learning atmosphere, encouraging students to actively participate and also helps build healthy, long-term learning habits.\r\n\r\nAs a school we are always thinking of ways to encourage and rewards students for making wise decisions and working hard. Having these reward systems in place gives students an opportunity to practice self-management and builds their self-esteem. The books, feelings chart and emotion cards have served as essential, safe, and engaging tools that enhance self-awareness, empathy, and resilience by allowing our students to connect with characters facing diverse, relatable challenges. These books have improved their emotional vocabulary, reduced behavioral issues, and promoted positive mental health, which is helping students to make academic progress. \r\n\r\nStudents have been engaged and eager to participate in small group lessons about how to control their anger and deal with big emotions.
