My students need read-along books and CDs for our language arts listening center.

My students are English language learners in a Title I school in Baltimore City. Our nickname is "the school of many nations" because our student body represents a multitude of countries and cultures. Diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Our diversity is not just valued locally, but citywide as well, since families from different neighborhoods enroll their children in our school. Despite these virtues, ours is still an urban school in a struggling district. Over 90% of students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. New and appropriate materials cannot always be provided for our school. My students are clever, caring, and funny individuals who deserve access to high quality books, supplies, and resources.
Last month, we were fortunate to get our listening center project funded; now we need read along books and CDs so my students can listen to stories during language arts centers. My students love wearing headphones and listening to read-along books will make for a popular choice at center time!
Listening to stories provides students with a multisensory approach to reading.
Students can follow along with their own copy of the text while listening to the story on headphones. This experience allows students to understand the content of the story, be exposed to new vocabulary words, make connections, use their imaginations and listen critically, all while engaging with the story in a personal, engaging way. By listening to these read-alongs over and over, my English language learners will be able to build their fluency and comprehension as they repeatedly connect the words they hear to the print on the page. Read-alongs also model fluent reading, and enable my students to listen to the prosody of different readers, so they don't only have to listen to my voice all the time!
Your donation to our project will bring these read-aloud books and CDs to our listening center and will make a difference in our classroom by helping my students become betters readers and listeners.
