Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students live in Santa Paula, California, located about fifty miles north of Los Angeles. We are surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest and rich agricultural lands filled with commercial nurseries, avocado, and citrus orchards.

Many of our students are recent immigrants or children of immigrants, and although they live only ten miles from the Pacific Ocean, many have never been to the local beaches.

About eighty percent of our students are second language learners, with ninety-seven percent of them on the free or reduced lunch program.

In spite of these challenges, these students are bright, enthusiastic and eager to learn. Every morning they greet us with smiles and great expectations. Their parents are sometimes shy due to the language barrier, but all are eager for their children to do their best at school. Many of these parents work for the large farms and orchards, often working long shifts to support their children and provide for their future.

The principal, teachers, and supporting staff are dedicated to working as a team to provide the students with the academic and social skills needed for success in the 21st Century.

My Project

My students need headphones with microphones to record their voices clearly. We are lucky enough to have 16 iPads in my classroom, however, when I ask students to record answers to questions, review a book, or take a reading test, their voices are often overwhelmed by background noise. Some of my students with learning disabilities have access to voice to text technology, but the device must hear the voice clearly for this application to work.

21st-century technology gives students a wealth of opportunities to be heard, using apps such as voice to text, FlipGrid, and Literably.

My classroom is a busy and active place. Sounds from the surrounding students, playground, and even our air conditioning system can overwhelm a student's voice when he or she is recording or using voice to text tools. These tools are not effective when the recordings can't be heard due to background noise. Headphones with microphones will help overcome this problem and let my students' voices be heard.
