My Students

While my students are no longer Newcomers to this country, they struggle to improve their English reading and writing skills. To hear them speak, they might sound like regular American kids, but when you read their writing or listen to them reading out loud you can see that they need a great deal of practice reading and writing in English.

During this time of online learning, my students have had many challenges, and getting good books to read should not be one of them.

Getting technology and internet access has drained all their resources and resolve since they have had to negotiate surveys and phone calls in a language that is still new to them and their parents.

They are trying to complete work while watching younger siblings. They have to share devices with older siblings. In addition, many of my students have trouble getting enough food to eat or other basic care items. I want to make sure they have something to help them escape the challenges they are facing every day which will also help them grow their skills at the same time.

My Project

At the end of last year, we switched to virtual learning (like most schools in the country). Since my students are still learning English, this shift was extremely difficult for them. They depend on being at school to practice their English skills, especially listening and speaking. To help them, I made videos and used Flipgrid to get them to practice these skills, but many struggled because they didn't have a way to record themselves or listen to the videos I made. Maybe their home is noisy because they have five siblings trying to share technology and complete their work. Maybe they can't figure out how to record with their phone or they have a computer, but no microphone. Maybe they have a baby brother or sister who sleeps nearby and they have to stay quiet. Whatever the reason, I needed to find a solution and get my students listening to and speaking English while at home.

These headphones with microphones will make sure all my students can practice these crucial English skills while learning at home.

My students are losing precious time and must practice their English in order to improve. It is essential to their success before they leave middle school. With your help, they will be able to do this and grow their skills!
