My Project

I look at the calendar and realize that the new year will soon be underway. I know my new students will need Kleenex tissues, wipes and supplies. I teach at an older, urban school and I will have (at least) 30 students in my class. Many of my wonderful second-grade students are the children of deployed military personnel. Some are deemed at-risk, some are new comers, some are trying very hard to learn English, and some are struggling because they don't have much support at home. I met these kids at the end of last school year and I know they all try very hard to learn everything they can. I love their can-do attitudes. Almost all of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school, and, as a result, we lack the resources and opportunities of many other schools.

My students are going to learn so much this year but when they cannot afford essential supplies and headphones, they feel bad about themselves and school.

My kids use their computers everyday for math and more. They need the headphones so they can access their math and reading computer programs and not disturb other kids in the class. They consume wipes and Kleenex at a fast pace. They are just excited, anxious kids who are often rushed and supplies just seem to disappear by the end of the day!
