My students know that we have 45.7 million people in the United States without health insurance. They are passionate about making a difference in the health field.
The need for accurate health information is crucial -- not only for our success as a society, but also for our survival as a species.
My students' ambitious dreams inspire me:
"I want to be a family physician."
"I want to be a psychiatrist."
"International medicine, Doctors Without Borders, sounds like my dream job."
How can my students succeed as health and medical students and researchers without basic reference materials?
My students are embarking on college-level research on issues like disease management, chronic care management, patient safety, nursing and healthcare administration.
These books will help inform, inspire and motivate students -- not only to write excellent research papers, but also to consider devoting their lives to public health.
My Project
The two books I am requesting are some of the top titles in the public health field.
"Population Heath: Creating a Culture of Wellness" is accessible to students while providing them with the level of information a professional in the field would need. Each chapter provides a clear, brief introduction of topics from various perspectives.
"Essentials of Public Health" invites students to consider career possibilities in various fields, including epidemiology and biomedical areas.
Our children and grandchildren's future depend on the next generation's team of healthcare professionals, and the policy-makers who affect change.
Our students deserve the chance to consider medicine-related fields in college, and make a difference in their future careers. These materials will be used for one semester in our classroom, and then will be donated to enrich the school's library so 500 students each year can benefit for years to come.
