This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with students who come from various backgrounds, many of whom are English Language Learners from low-income families who have the drive to learn. These students are friendly and love to be engaged and immersed in the English language and our school culture.

Many of my students have limited access to opportunities due to family structure and responsibilities.

Many of them are beginning a new life in this country and deal with isolation, transition, and adjustment to the expectations of a new culture and school system.

My Project

In times of health concerns, I would love to offer healthy food options for my students. I always see them with a bag of chips and sugar-filled drinks. As growing teenagers, they need to eat well and sleep well. Unfortunately, school lunches do not attract their appetite and they end up depending on fast food. Every day, I hear the question "Ms., do you have something to eat?" It hurts my heart as a mother and educator to hear this question. After all, we know that they need to have basic needs before academics.

Therefore, I kindly request a selection of nuts, fruit, bars, and drinks for my students.

The supply will be stored in student fridge (which we recently received from Donors Choose) and distributed upon student needs. Students usually seek for food either when they miss breakfast, when they have no money or when they get tired/sleepy in the afternoon classes. The expected outcome of this project is to boost student engagement and performance through good food in their system.
