I want to inspire my students to learn and be everything that they can be in this world.
My students attend a very large, Title I public school in a beautiful, rural town in North Carolina. Our school is overcrowded and space and supplies are tight. Our students are happy and are learning and make every day a wonderful learning day with their smiles and thirst for learning. All economic levels are represented. Most of my students have parents that are still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Florence.
Our state has adopted the Common Core Curriculum which has integrated Science, Technology, Math, and Art into all parts of the daily curriculum. Our community is close, with parents willing to do whatever it takes to give their children a good education. My students will need to take a writing test at the end of the year to show they are on grade level.
My Project
My students eat a healthy lunch at school in our cafeteria. That is at 11:00am. After a day of learning, they want a snack around 3:00pm. This has always been the way we do things at our large school. It seems it is harder for some students to bring in a healthy snack and drink since our community was devastated by the recent hurricanes. With the demands that recovering from Hurricane Florence has put on our families, things like snacks and a drink can easily be put into the background. The chips, granola bars, nuts and popcorn are all low sugar and healthy snacks for children. The drinks are also low sugar and healthy for growing children. Having a snack at 3:00pm for each of my students would help carry them over until dinner time at their homes. Many go to day care and do not get home until 6:00 or 7:00 in the evening. I would like to have these healthy snacks and drinks to tide my students over until they are able to eat a hot and healthy dinner with their family.
