My students need healthy snacks to provide energy and to help keep them focused- especially when many cry out of hunger, or try to bring free lunch home.

Hi! I am a teacher at low-income school in Washington D.C. My students are awesome and I love each and every one of them. We are in one of the most trendiest neighborhoods going through a lot of gentrification. They are pretty resilient and the community helps out a lot!
We are a Title I, 40/40 school and my students do not have a lot of resources at home.
Because of this, a lot of my students may not have access to healthy meals and snacks for school. A lot of my students complain about hunger and some even try to bring lunch home with them. I would really love to be able to provide healthy snacks so that when they need them, they are available.
My students come to school eager and happy to learn each day. Many have outside circumstances that in the 2nd grade that may override any kind of teaching that I do. One of those things is hunger. Many of my students' parents can't provide things such as a guaranteed breakfast, let alone dinner. I see many of my kids trying to bring home oranges or anything they can sneak out of the cafeteria from their free lunches. Some of my students, because they are still young, burst out in tears in class because they are "starving". I want to provide a bank of crackers, fruit snacks, fruit leather, and other healthy snacks for them. l also want to teach them the importance of selecting healthy options.
I plan on integrating healthy snacks as a source of energy into our first reading unit on plants.
This allows the students to understand why it is important to think about your choices of what you put into your body. This just so happens to also start the school year with snacks that give them nourishment and keep them focused on class.
