My Project

My Students

I am a psychiatric social worker in a community composed of primarily English learners.

Our students experience inter-generational trauma and chronic stress in their community and home life. Many of our students have learned to be on automatic survival-mode which creates anxious thoughts and feelings which also develop depression among other brain challenges.

Our students need trauma-informed school environments where they can feel safe and build healthy relationships with peers and teachers.

Therefore my office needs to be equipped with mindfulness strategies and items to assist students decrease their symptoms and cultivate inner resources such as knowing when they need time for themselves. During therapeutic sessions, students can benefit from using stress balls, fidget toys, pillows, blankets that can help them focus on their thoughts and feelings and regain focus and be ready to return to the class and learn. Additionally, being a low-income student body, snacks and water are also in high need.

My office space is in need of soft pillows, bean bags, water jug, cups, play-dough, colored pencils, coloring books, pinwheels (to practice breathing), glitter calm down sensory bottles, stress-balls, small blankets, books on mindfulness and feelings, and other items.
