My Students

Support our garden and change the world, or at least a small community in the heart of Oregon. I teach sixth grade science at a public middle school. To get my students learning outdoors, we are starting a community garden. We have the dirt. Sun? That's covered. What we need are worms!

I teach a hard working group of middle school students who are eager to start growing organic food that will be incorporated into our school lunch program.

Our school promotes expeditionary learning strategies in which students become active participants in their learning through hands-on, relevant activities.

My Project

We need worm composting bins and a tool box to help get our garden program up and running. The benefits to my students may be too long to list here, but the gist of it is this: Large anecdotal evidence is emerging to say that garden programs can enhance students’ learning in academic, social and health-related domains. The sustainable farm-to-table movement has impacted students in settings from California to the White House, bringing students an appreciation of locally grown food and pride in what can be achieved when they get their hands in the dirt. Because gardening addresses many life skills including cooking, serving and eating, not to mention sometimes strenuous physical activity, students learn how to lead healthy lives.

Your donation will give my school the opportunity to breed adolescents that care about the land they live on and the quality of food they put in their bodies, not to mention the payback from a hard day's work outside.

In addition, this project will benefit the environment and engage our students in a very hands-on learning experience that will benefit them throughout their lives.
