Help me give my students access to healthy foods and cooking experiences. A classroom refrigerator, microwave, blender, slow cooker and cooking utensils will enable us to safely store children's meals as well as prepare recipes with the students.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach preschoolers with developmental delays in a Title I school serving a significant number of low-income families. Additionally, due to our location near a large military base, many of my students have a parent in the military and may experience a high level of stress due to parental separation or frequent relocations. My students have cognitive, language, and fine motor delays as well as sensory differences. They possess great abilities but require many different approaches to learning. Among their many challenges, many of them are learning how to feed themselves, maybe be very picky eaters with restricted diets, and need encouragement to try new foods and to become interested in food preparation.
My Project
My students have limited diets and many have special meals prepared for them from home. In order to properly and safely store these foods my classroom needs a refrigerator and microwave. Additionally, we will use these appliances to make recipes and learn how to follow a recipe, measure, stir, cut, pour and cook! The mini fridge with the freezer will allow us to properly store the children's meals as well as ingredients for cooking activities. A microwave will allow us to gently warm their lunches from home as well as increase the number of cooking activities we can do in the classroom. A smoothie blender and slow cooker will also allow us to make a variety of recipes and tasting experiences with the students!
It is important that young children with special needs develop the skills to feed themselves and an interest in food preparation.
The additional materials such as child safe cutting utensils and measuring tools will help engage them and allow us to involve multiple children at once.
