My students are expectant mothers between the ages of 13 & 17 years old. As many of us know or remember, the teen years are spent on fast food meals and plenty of snacking. However, these students need to eat more nutritiously than ever, because they are eating for two. Everything they eat directly affects the health of the new person they are carrying. One of my students recently expressed that she wished she knew how to prepare some healthy meals for her to eat now, as well as, knowing how to prepare snacks and meals for her child in the future. I could just hand her a book on Nutrition and/or a cookbook, but... How about teaching, showing and letting the students experience preparing healthy snacks and meals? This is where you the donor can help us. I would like to purchase a range top and oven for our classroom. Also supplies, to help us prepare the meals, which include a food processor, pans, and cooking utensils. Currently the students are enrolled in a class called "Preparation for Parenting" which includes presenting information on nutrition. This provides a great opportunity to include the actual preparing of nutritious meals and snacks. I have the class time, the mothers are ready and willing to learn... We need you to provide the equipment. Help me teach these mothers how to eat healthy and in turn teach their children healthy eating habits.
