The reality of teaching and being a student in a low income, high poverty school is that we are constantly exposed to illness. Many parents do not have access to adequate medical care or the luxury of being able to keep their children home from school when they become ill.
Our school is located in an economically disadvantaged urban neighborhood with a high immigrant population.
Almost all of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
It is not uncommon for my students to attend school when they are very sick. As a result, colds and flus are constantly being passed back and forth. You can imagine how challenging it is for students to learn when they can barely keep their heads up. I myself have been sick on at least 8 separate occasions this school year, the most serious being a month long cold that turned into pneumonia. It was difficult for both me and my students when I had to take an extended leave of absence to recover.
My Project
These products will help me prevent the spread of germs and create a healthier classroom environment for my students. I have selected environmentally friendly non-toxic products such as hand sanitizers and soaps that students will use on a daily basis to clean their hands after sneezing or coughing, and before eating. The cleaning wipes will be used to wipe down tables at the end of every day.
We spend a lot of time on our classroom rugs and, unfortunately, the custodial staff is not able to clean or vacuum them on a regular basis. The Hoover vacuum and carpet cleaning machine will be used to clean and sanitize our rugs (and happily shared with other classrooms).
I have also selected organizational containers that will minimize the number of tiny hands that touch classroom supplies such as pens, paper, crayons, and glue sticks.
The Hepa air purifiers will help keep the air in our room free from allergens, dust, bacteria, and airborne viruses.
Your donation will help me create a healthy classroom environment for my students.
My hope is that diligent use of these products will prevent/reduce instances of student illness. Healthy students are happy students, and happy students are ready to learn!
