My students need materials to continue learning with our hydroponic garden tower. With materials such as a salad spinner, blender, hot plate, and pans, we will be able to cook with the produce we are growing.
More than 3/4 of my students are from a low-income family. We qualify for 100% of our students to have free breakfast and free lunch. They are faced with challenges each day inside and outside of the classroom. My goal is to provide these students with "extra" experiences that they may not encounter otherwise. I have a creative personality and would love to share that with my students.
I would love to give my students some hands-on, real-world experiences, and I feel that STEM-based activities will provide them with that opportunity.
They will work towards preparing for their future and get them thinking about a career they would love. We have recently began using a garden tower to grow our own vegetables; many of those vegetables the students have never had the opportunity to try. I am trying my hardest to bring these real-world experiences to my students, who may otherwise never have the chance to experience it.
My Project
My class has been growing fruits and vegetables in our garden tower this year. Many of the students in my class haven't had the opportunity to try any of these foods outside of the classroom. We are growing many different greens, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, chard, and other fruits and vegetables.
We are hoping to use the materials listed to continue new hands-on learning and tasting experiences!
With several different types of lettuce growing, the salad spinner will teach students how to prepare clean vegetables. We will use the blender to mix together different fruits and vegetables to create healthy smoothies. The hotplate and pan will allow us to saute many of the vegetables.
I am "going green" by purchasing a set of plates, bowls, cups, and silverware for each student. We can avoid using the styrofoam cups/bowls and putting toxins into the Earth. This will also help avoid the frustration of trying to use cheap, plastic silverware while enjoying our meals.
My students will gain the hands-on experiences of growing their food from a seed, watching it produce, and then cooking the food in a variety of different ways. The life cycle stages of plants also correlate directly with our science objectives and CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Children's Health) initiatives in our building.
