Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with students who are English language learners and have learning disabilities. They also come from families that struggle with paying bills and affording school supplies and books. Despite these challenges, my students bring many strengths to the classroom, including a passion for learning and a willingness to take risks as they acquire the building blocks of reading.

My students love math, science, computers, and art, and they love learning how things work.

They are curious about the world and are eager to improve their literacy skills.

My Project

My students need a cutting board and peeler to chop and peel fresh vegetables and fruits to enjoy with homemade dips and salsas. They will use the measuring cups when following recipes from the cookbooks, which will awaken my students' minds and appetites to the variety of cuisines from around the world. Since my students frequently come to school hungry, they need an assortment of wholesome snacks such as pistachios, almonds, crackers, fruit leather, apple chips, popcorn, and pop chips to keep them focused and ready to learn. The plates and napkins will be used to serve the snacks and the cups will be used to enjoy an assortment of hot herbal teas, which my students will enjoy while reading books during our "Poetry and Tea" events. The Clorox wipes will keep our tables neat and clean. The chocolates and candies will be enjoyed sporadically on days when my students need a little incentive to get started on their writing or math assignments.

Janet Renee, MS, explains that healthy snacks boost well-being and support academic success: "Children need a steady supply of nutrients to fuel their bodies and brains so that they grow and develop properly" (from 'What Are the Benefits of Children Eating Snacks During School?' SF Gate on November 27, 2018).

Students will be more motivated to learn when their stomachs are not grumbling and when their brains are nourished with vitamins and minerals.

My students will greatly appreciate this assortment of healthy snacks and supplies. These delicious snacks will give my students energy to think and grow while learning and completing their homework and class assignments. Your support of our classroom is greatly appreciated!
