I teach 13- through 21-year-old young adults with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments. My students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after high school. I focus on functional academics, daily living skills, and job skills.
Each student is working towards being an independent, working member of the community.
Some of my students participate in internships and jobs around our school building and the community as part of their education. They practice cooking, cleaning, money, time, and functional writing skills.
The main goal for my students is to be successful after leaving high school. This includes teaching functional academics, job skills, life skills and daily living skills. My students need to be taught good hygiene routines that they can carry into their daily lives after high school in order to be successful in the workplace. For many students, these routines have not been taught or reinforced at home.
The students want to look and smell good, but for many of them, they don't have the items needed to do this.
The items purchased will be used to restock each student's "get fresh" box that they use each morning and after playing outside or in gym class. These boxes have been used for a few years and the students look forward to knowing that they have the items they need. The students ask to use the boxes and are happy to show off their freshly brushed teeth or hair when they get done.
