My Students

My students love to learn with hands-on approaches, using manipulatives to demonstrate understanding. They love to use high-interest readers to learn about topics.

I am a full-time teacher in the REACH program which is a self-contained special education program that currently has six students in fifth through eighth grades.

The REACH program is an intensive, specialized program that is focused on increasing student learning, engagement, and behavior using a multi-sensory, multi-faceted approach. The focus of the classroom is reading and mathematics, along with social skills and self-advocacy.

My position is unique and I am very fortunate because I have been teaching the same group of students for five years now. This allows me to know and understand my students' needs very well. I am able to see their academic, behavior, and social gains, and they have made so much progress! I have taken a group of multi-age, multi-grade students, and fostered a classroom culture that encourages acceptance, fosters independence, develops friendships, and creates a love for learning.

My Project

COVID-19 has drastically changed the public school education that students receive. As you know, we now have masks and social distancing requirements in the classroom. Every new cough, sneeze, or sign of sickness sends the entire school into panic.

The REACH classroom needs to be clean so that students can continue in-person learning.

We can achieve this cleanliness first and foremost, by getting a handheld upholstery cleaner that we will use in the classroom in areas that need extra cleaning. On top of having a cleaner, I would also like to add floor tiles in a high traffic area that can be sanitized more frequently. Students go through Germ-X constantly in the classroom so having more on hand would be beneficial. I also would like to have students use computer wipes daily for sanitizing computers.

To make the classroom air smell better, the classroom needs an oil diffuser. Students will come to a clean and fresh classroom. Students need water bottles and chap stick to support their social/emotional well being in the classroom.
