Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My greatest hopes as an educator is that my students are prepared adults, have skills needed to be productive, caring citizens in our community, and are confident in their own abilities for the path they have chosen to follow. I believe the Senior Portfolio requirement supports all of these hopes.
Our school is a Title I school serving approximately 1,050 students.
Seventy-two percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Sixty-five percent of our student body is Latino and the percentage of reclassified English proficient and English learners is approximately forty-two percent. Our student population is ethnically diverse, including students who are African American, American Indian, Asian, Filipino, Latino, Pacific Islander, and White. The overwhelming majority of our students continue their education after high school at community college or four year institutions. Despite financial hardships that many families face, over seventy percent of our students graduate and attend college. The Senior Portfolio Project is an instrumental tool they can use to achieve their personal, academic, and emotional goals.
My Project
The 12th grade Academy, Health and Human Development, is made up of approximately 225 students and is the focus of this project. I am requesting three ring binders and page protectors for 175 out of 225 students in the 12th grade. These students are expected to develop a Portfolio that will help to prepare them for life after high school. All portfolio items must be completed to participate in the Senior Prom and graduation ceremony. Exemplary portfolios will be presented to 9th, 10th and 11th graders and all portfolios are presented to the individual student’s advisory class, as well as our NAHS community. The portfolio is a resource that can be used to impress employers and college registrars. The portfolio is a collection of evidence that showcases accomplishments in academics, extra-curricular activities, community service, and personal interests. It is meant to reflect who the student is as well as who and what they plan to become.
The donations gifted to this project will make a significant difference in the lives of 175 students who otherwise would struggle to find the money to pay for these resources.
My students are hard working, poverty stricken individuals, who appreciate even the smallest token of support. Support to this project gives them the tools needed to go out into the world and present to others their accomplishments, struggles, talents, and hopes. Thank you for your consideration towards this project.
