We've been able to be in more classrooms and observe students showing their Positive Puma Pride.\r\n\r\nAll students have benefited from the new technology. However, new students and those that have struggled in the past seem to be most positively influenced by the iPads being readily available for staff members to meet and greet them as needed. Teaching students with special needs within a full inclusion program is even harder! But you know what makes it easier? You! Your generous donation has provided hands-on math games and manipulatives to provide targeted, remedial support for my students to fully access the Algebra 1 curriculum in a way that is fun, social, and low-risk. To see them play and learn at the same time has been so rewarding. \r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, I was surprised at how excited they were. Typically, when presenting students with disabilities math tasks, they are not jumping for joy. I laid out the electronic games first, fully loaded with batteries and ready to go, and off they went! Pressing buttons, passing the game back and forth to each other, laughing, and being ultra-competitive in who can get the highest score. The next class, we played math splat and dominoes and I know I had the loudest room on campus! I am a firm believer that kids learn when they are having fun. Your donations have made it possible for me to reteach concepts my students struggle with in ways where they think they are just playing. I couldn't ask for more.\r\n\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my students are developing essential skills such as patterns, number sense, integers, equations, and graphing. These donations provide a space for my students to practice skills at their own pace while building confidence and motivation. I did not tell them the items would be arriving, but one by one, I secretly unboxed them and stored them away in a private cupboard, until the day I received it all for the big reveal. I'll be honest, I was a bit concerned because the students I had last year were all girls and a lot of the items I listed were with them in mind but over the summer my assignment changed and I suddenly had a room full of boys. Boy, oh boy! When I tell you I had nothing to worry about! \r\n\r\nOur classes are 108 minutes long so I always leave time in the middle of our class period for a 5-8 minute brain break. On the day of the reveal, I opened the secret cupboard and yelled out, \"Surprise!\" and all the kids looked shocked! I started piling all of the donations on one of the tables and their eyes kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger. One boy finally said, \"Ms. Alas, what are you going to do with all of this?\" I simply said, \"No, no, no- what are all of you going to do with all of this!?\". I went on to explain to them that these gifts were sent for them to use whenever they needed to spend time self-regulating or maintaining a sense of peace in their days through the incredibly generous hearts of complete strangers who cared about their well-being. They sat there stunned. Until they didn't! \r\n\r\nWho knew how much teenage boys needed weighted stuffed animals, thinking putty, flower Lego's, and so much more!? I was so surprised at how quickly they asked for each item as they smiled, connected and shared with each other, played games together, or quietly colored in peace. It was an exceptionally lovely moment. \r\nI am a veteran Special Education teacher and your donations provided moments for students with specific learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, traumatic brain disorder, and emotional disturbance to feel loved and supported. For a moment, and many moments to follow, they forgot about all of their worries, all of their struggles and challenges, and lived joyfully in the moment.\r\n\r\nSeveral days later, I had a lunch meeting with the students I taught last year. Many of them were having an incredibly hard time transitioning to a new case carrier and as we sat and talked about the changes, many tears were shed... by them and by me. I opened the self- regulation station cabinet and took out the donations. I read them two poems from the books. I passed out the putty and stress balls for them to use, and showed each and every donation. In that moment, we decided we would meet once a month at lunch so they could also have all access to the lovely donations. \r\nEvery single day since that unboxing day and that lunch meeting, kids have used one or more of your donations to support their mental health, emotional needs, and social interactions. They have the freedom to grab without ever asking. It has been beautiful to watch teenage boys open up and express their needs so freely. Additionally, I has provided a space to connect with students who thought had lost access to me this year. The comfort and the safety your donations have supplied, and will continue to provide, is extraordinary. I am eternally thankful to you for caring about me and my students. So, my first mission was accomplished, which was to bring some level of excitement to the new Pumas.\r\n\r\nThe next phase of my plan is to continue to highlight our Positive Puma program by selecting one recipient from each grade each month in a sort of student of the month. However, this will be a Puma of the Month award. Teachers and Staff are eligible for staff member of the month in 5 various categories, and now students will be for our R.O.A.R.S. - Respectful, Open-Minded, Ambitious, Responsible, and Safe & Sound.\r\n\r\nThe hype is here! Students and staff have come by my office to see the new baby pumas. Now they all want to know how to get one.
