Healing Through Harvesting

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from diverse backgrounds. Many are students with interrupted formal education. They tackle everyday adversity and obstacles with a positive attitude. As young adolescents, living through a pandemic, learning a new culture, they face a lot of emotions and challenges. They walk into class everyday ready to learn, support those around them.

Their cultural diversity fuels the learning within the classroom.

These students enjoy learning to different modalities. They are open minded and creative, willing and ready to learn new skills, and about the world around them.

My Project

My students have successfully gardened within community gardens near their school. They have also cleaned and gardened in the school backyard with an effort to provide a space where their peers can enjoy. Now they want to continue their gardening journey through the winter. In order to do this we need supplies. The classroom has a hydroponic garden, but it is missing a lot of key materials. This project will allow students to grow their own herbs and vegetables. They will be taught different healthy plates they can make with these items at home. And lastly be able to grow their own, and take it home with them. Gardening has been a source of healing for my students, many are newcomers, who are adjusting to a new culture. Between the changes they experience in life, adolescence, and now with the pandemic, gardening has been a tool they have used to cope with the emotional challenges they face. This project will help them expand from outside gardening, to inside, where they can continue using this outlet as a positive way to express their emotions and relieve stress.
