My middle and high school students live in a small, rural town right on the border with Canada. While many are eager to learn in general, the pandemic has put stress on most students' lives. Students often experience trauma for a variety of reasons such as poverty, lack of stability, and emotional upheavals.
My Project
Students can experience stress at any time of day. They need to self-regulate before they are able to re-focus on learning.
Being creative can give students a mindful and meaningful way to self-regulate!
One of my students has noticed that when she creates art, she relaxes and forgets her worries. She would like others to be able to use art as therapy too. She and I would like to create an Art Therapy Station in our school so all our students will have a place to go and find art activities to help them self-regulate. She has found several art therapy activities for students to work on. Now, we just need the art materials for students to use!
We are designing an area in one of our hallways near the art room which will have a table full of suggested art activities to calm anxieties and/or de-escalate stess and anger. We hope to have an array of art supplies for students to use for the activities. We also hope to decorate the walls with inspirational messages and artwork by and for students. The art supplies we are asking for would help make this station possible!
