My Students

I support two high poverty elementary schools.

My students are amazing! Despite the hardships that many face, they come to school each day with resilience and enthusiasm. Starting at a young age, many of my students have experienced a great deal of trauma in their lives. From growing up in poverty, experiencing homelessness, witnessing substance use, physical/emotional abuse, incarceration of a parent or sibling, or death of a family member, my students' little minds and hearts can be heavy. These hardships can impede on their ability to succeed academically and socially in their classrooms.

My Project

"Children’s lives are enhanced by playing creatively and by playing children learn and develop as individuals; it assists in their emotional and intellectual development and mental health resilience which are core building blocks for their transition years." (Play Scotland) My goal as a counselor in working with children who have experienced trauma is to help rewrite their story, foster their social/emotional skills, and build their resilience. Through therapeutic play and art, I strive to create an environment where students can be vulnerable, work through some difficult feelings and emotions, and build a trusting relationship with a positive adult role model. Through the use of sensory materials such as play dough and sand, creative art projects, and therapeutic games, my students will be able to open up in a way that is enriching, developmentally appropriate, and therapeutically effective.

My students will experience greater success socially, emotionally, and academically, by talking and playing through the hardships that they face in their daily lives.
