Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from an impoverished neighborhood. Most of them have been devastated by a natural disaster which has demolished their homes and their community . For most of them, English is their second language and they have not had the same enrichment opportunities as children who don't live in poverty.
I know that despite having to overcome language obstacles and socioeconomic struggles, they will come to school, ready to learn.
When they come to my art class, they are ready to create and get lost in their art work.
My Project
My students will learn the process of paper mache and plaster sculpture making. They will use a variety of techniques to create their own sculptures. They will use paper mache and plaster strips to create heart shapes with wings, in the style of Chris Uphues. After the heart forms dry, the children will have choose color schemes for their winged hearts and paint them with acrylic paints. Details will be added with oil paint pens and sealed with a clear gloss medium. Finally a brown craft paper gift bag will be decorated to place the heart inside.
Children will be encouraged to gift their healing heart to members of our community who have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
Creating art to heal others is healing in itself. This project will help my students and their community heal from the trauma of the disaster they have experienced. This will bring joy to my students as well as some much needed love and light to the city during a difficult time!
