The fourth graders at Guerrero are resilient and enthusiastic.

They are eager to learn and love to be at school. Like all modern learners, our students need to be able to use technology. Although many of them lack basic computer skills, they are always excited to use computers and are quick to pick up on the technological skills that will benefit them in the future. Our school serves a low income, transient population. This means that many of the students we teach are only in our classrooms for a few months, and often come to us with many gaps in their education. As teachers it is our job to give these students the best possible educational experiences we can, whether they are with us for 10 months or 10 days. The individualized approach that educational technology provides is a powerful tool in teaching students with whom we only have a short time.

My Project

Our students, many of whom enter fourth grade with significant gaps in their mathematical understanding, benefit greatly from a piece of software called Spacial Temporal Math. In this program, a friendly penguin name JiJi leads the students through games that teach math concepts in a visual way. ST Math is designed so that each student gets individualized games and feedback, so each student is working on a different activity. The students absolutely love their time with JiJi and always look forward to it. Best of all, while the rest of the class is engaged with ST Math the teachers can give small group lessons to provide students with even more support. As you might imagine, with all that learning going on the classroom gets quite noisy during JiJi time. Providing each student with a set of headphones would allow them to fully interact with JiJi without disturbing their neighbors or the teacher's small group.

Technology and math skills are both critical to our students' future endeavors.
