This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Character Strong is an online SEL curriculum where teachers can share videos and activities for students to learn different character traits. It teaches students about respect, responsibility, gratitude, empathy, perseverance, honesty, cooperation, courage and creativity.

As a 1st grade teacher, my goal is to provide a strong foundation in education to ensure that my students are prepared socially and emotional as well as master their 1st grade common core standards.

My 1st graders will be able to use these requested headphones to listen to videos from Character Strong and teacher directed YouTube videos to learn more about social emotional learning and how to show compassion for others. After listening to the videos about monthly character traits such as empathy, students will get the opportunity to brainstorm with other classmates to recreate real life scenarios they see happening at the recess, in class, library, lunch area and at home. They will act out with classmates strategies on how to show compassion for others using the monthly Character Strong character traits. For example in the character trait: empathy, students can re-enact a fictional situation that occurred at the lunch tables where one of my students bumped into another student by accident causing her lunch tray to fall onto the ground. The class can brainstorm ideas with different ending to the incident to show compassion. Being able to have my students use the headphones to listen to videos and then re-enact real life scenarios with a small group of peers is also a great way for me to evaluate my students' comprehension of our SEL learning target as well as speaking and listening 1st grade common core standards.
